Enhancing Maternal and Child Health: Axim Government Hospital Receives Critical Equipment for NICU, Maternity, and Paediatric Wards

In a significant boost to healthcare delivery in the Nzema East Municipality, the Axim Government Hospital took delivery of medical equipment donated by The Haven Place Foundation. The donation, aimed at strengthening the facility’s capacity to handle neonatal and paediatric emergencies, was distributed across the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Maternity Ward, and the Paediatric Ward.

Bridging the Gap in Neonatal Care

The arrival of these items came at a crucial time for the hospital’s NICU. Neonatal care remains a high priority for the facility as it serves a growing population of mothers and newborns across the municipality. The newly donated equipment which includes, incubators, phototherapy machines, or monitors is expected to drastically reduce the need for referrals to secondary and tertiary hospitals in Takoradi or Sekondi.

For many families in Axim, this means access to life-saving technology right in their community, ensuring that preterm babies and infants with jaundice or respiratory distress receive immediate attention.

Support for Mothers and Children

Beyond the NICU, the Maternity and Paediatric wards also received essential supplies designed to improve the patient experience and clinical outcomes. The Maternity Ward’s new equipment will support safer deliveries and better post-natal monitoring, while the Paediatric Ward is now better positioned to manage the health needs of children under five.

A Call for Sustainability

During the presentation, hospital management expressed profound gratitude to the donors, noting that such partnerships are vital for the survival of district hospitals. “This donation is not just about the machines; it is about the lives of the mothers and children we serve every day,” Dr. Sutherland remarked.

Management also used the occasion to appeal for continued support, highlighting the need for regular maintenance of the new equipment and further infrastructure upgrades to match the hospital’s growing status as a primary healthcare hub in the Western Region.

Impact on the Community

Traditional leaders lauded the gesture, describing it as a “divine intervention” for the vulnerable. With the Axim Government Hospital now better equipped, the community looks forward to a future where no mother or child is lost due to a lack of basic medical technology.
