While the Kundum Festival is traditionally a time of celebration and culture, this year’s festivities took on a lifesaving dimension. On Tuesday, September 10, 2025, The Haven Place Foundation (HPF), in partnership with the Axim Government Hospital and the NHIA, launched a health intervention that saw hundreds of residents receive medical care and insurance coverage.
Direct Medical Intervention
The health screening exercise, supported by corporate partners like CGM Company Limited and several pharmaceutical sponsors, provided a “hospital-to-the-people” experience. More than 150+ community members were screened for critical indicators, including:
- Malaria
- Blood Pressure
- Blood Sugar levels
Beyond diagnostics, the foundation focused on preventive education. In a significant boost to the local health system, all remaining medications and pharmaceuticals from the exercise were donated directly to the Axim Government Hospital to support their ongoing patient care.
Removing Barriers to Insurance
The Haven Place Foundation addressed a major hurdle in rural healthcare: NHIS accessibility. Recognizing that many families let their insurance lapse due to cost or distance, HPF fully funded the registration and renewal costs for the community.
The response was overwhelming:
- Renewals: 556 people (including 314 children)
- New Registrations: 129 people (68 children and 61 adults)
“Healthcare shouldn’t be hard to reach,” a representative from HPF shared. “Many people skip check-ups because of cost. We addressed those barriers directly so community members could walk away with access to care they didn’t have before.”
A Surge in Demand Leads to Extension
The initiative’s success was so profound that it caught the attention of the Nzema East Municipal Assembly. Due to the high turnout and the efficiency of the NHIA team, the Assembly sponsored an additional two-day extension of the program to ensure no one was left behind.
Health and Education: A Shared Goal
This intervention is linked to our broader mission of education. By ensuring students and their families are healthy, we are removing the medical cost burdens that often prevent children from staying in school.
